CANNABIS The specific botanical name for the plant genus, of which there are two primary species types: Cannabis Indica and Cannabis Sativa. While hemp is only derived from the latter, marijuana can be sourced from either. It is wrong to interchangeably use the term cannabis with marijuana, although it is frequently done.
HEMP Derived from the plant Cannabis Sativa, Hemp is the term used to refer to Cannabis varieties that by definition contain 0.3% or less of THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive cannabinoid. CBD Cannabidiol is a phytocannabinoid, one of over 110 such compounds naturally found in the cannabis plant. CBD is the main active ingredient derived from the hemp plant, with no psychoactive properties. While CBD is probably the most studied of all of the cannabinoids, there is a lack of pure scientific trial data due to the only recent (2018) legalization of hemp by the US Farm Bill.
CBC Cannabichromene is one of the minor cannabinoids. Like CBD, it is not psychoactive. CBC has been found to have significant anti-inflammatory properties and is believed to also have anti-depressant and mood elevating properties.
CBG Cannabigerol is another minor cannabinoid. Like CBD, it is not psychoactive. CBG has anti-inflammatory properties and has had promising results in studies of depression and anxiety. Compared to CBD, it is found in very small amounts in the cannabis plant.
CBN Cannabinol, a minor cannabinoid, sometimes referred as the neurologic cannabinoid, is found in small quantities in the cannabis plant, and increases as the plant ages. It is very similar molecularly to THC but has no psychoactive properties. CBN is considered to be the most sedating of the cannabis plant derived compounds and only interacts with CB1 brain receptors. It should be considered as a sleep aid, and only taken prior to bedtime. Non-addicting. Very recent evidence (1/2022) suggests it may have neuroprotective properties versus oxidative stress for brain cells. (see Educational Links).
D-9 -THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) THC is the phytocannabinoid found in the cannabis plant and is the main psychoactive compound in marijuana. Found in the resin produced by the leaves and buds of primarily the female cannabis plant.
MARIJUANA The term used to classify varieties of Cannabis that contain more than 0.3% THC. A plant bred for its THC content can have as much as 30% THC by dry weight.
HEMP OIL Derived from plant seeds of Cannabis Sativa. Contains no CBD or THC. Used for skin health and orally as a supplement, food additive or for cooking. Same as hemp seed oil.
TERPENES Aromatic compounds found in cannabis plants, with potential clinical properties.
FLAVONOIDS Naturally occurring compounds found in cannabis plants, known to have antioxidant and other properties.
FULL SPECTRUM CBD Contains all of the naturally occurring compounds in the cannabis plant, including multiple cannabinoids (CBD, CBG, CBN et al), terpenes and flavonoids, and up to 0.3% THC for legal products.
BROAD SPECTRUM CBD The same contents as Full Spectrum, except has no THC.

ENTOURAGE EFFECT Refers to the idea that a biologically active compound can have an enhanced or diminished biological effect when combined with other compounds than when otherwise used alone. First espoused as a hypothetical in regard to cannabis compounds in 1998, specifically for THC and CBD, and CBD and terpenes, it remains unproven, but is invariably used in marketing by companies promoting Full and Broad Spectrum CBD.
EPIDIOLEX The only current FDA approved prescription CBD oil drug (2018), indicated for the treatment of seizures in two rare and severe forms of epilepsy. Research trials in progress by the same company, GW Pharmaceuticals (now, Jazz Pharmaceuticals), focus on CBD for Parkinson’s, MS, autism and schizophrenia.
MCT Medium Chain Triglycerides are partially man-made fats generally made by processing coconut and palm kernel oils in a laboratory. Commonly found in dairy products, they may contribute to weight loss by reducing body fat and increasing fullness.
